Please take the time to help
I want to encourage all of you to take just a few minutes, or hours, and go to a local shelter to volunteer in the next few days. Take the time to sit down and talk to a mom and her kids. They probably don't have a home to go back to, or if they do it's probably badly damaged. Find an older person that has experienced life, and bring them a cup of coffee and listen to them tell about what they've been through. Invite one of them, or a whole family, over for a meal. Show them you care, even if you feel like it's not enough. This people are uprooted from their homes, their friends, their families, their lives. Take some time from yours and help them to remember that it's going to be all right. If you were in their position, you'd want someone to do the same for you.

This is a reliable website with very generous people from all over the country opening their homes to victims of the hurricane. We are trying to get the news out in as many outlets as possible.

James, What a wise/kind/generous/thoughtful person you are. Wish I knew you personally. You are a 'pearl' in this world of no caring people. I just moved away from FL. After losing our home entirely when I was younger, and going thru several hurricanes last year there - we decided to get out of Dodge and we did. I have been tied to the TV since Saturday and we are so horrified by the total destruction and in NO the pictures and story is breaking our hearts. My prayers are with you and we are not the only ones praying. All over the world prayers are coming your way! Hang in there and keep being a bright lite in the world. Thank you for making me feel better tonight.

These benefit events are meant to unite people and raise money for the efforts. Kanye West's comment will actually hurt the fundraising. Screw him and his ridiculus comments. I'll keep my $100.... He's rich, deal with it yourself, you friggin moron!

Can anyone tell me what is needed down there? I have alot of baby and tots clothes, bottles, and baby blankets. I also have a few board games and child toys, stuffed animals for little ones, rattles and such. Please let me know if there is a need for these things for the younger victims. I also have washclothes, NEW/UNUSED make-up, perfumes, and such for the ladies who need to feel more like themselves.

Leslie, all these things are needed. What I would suggest, is that a bunch of you from your area get together and put the different sorts of items in boxes, label them, and then load them on a truck or trailer and find someone to take it to this area. The scope of this is so big, I don't know that any one organization is "in the know" of where to send stuff, but the Red Cross is probably a good start. If not there, our church is going down to St Bernard Parish in a few weeks to help with cleanup and rebuild, perhaps we could stage it here until we go there.
